The MotoPath Route Planner is a free web tool to plan motorcycle itineraries straight from your browser, with nothing to install. It calculates the route with the Valhalla engine optimised for two wheels, shows you distance, duration and arrival time, and lets you download a .gpx file ready to follow with MotoSpeed or any navigator.
- Motorcycle-optimised Valhalla routing
- Points via address search or pin on the map
- Estimated distance, duration and arrival time
- Instant
.gpxexport - Free account to save routes
- Zero installs, zero advertising trackers
2. Opening the Planner
Open motopath.it/planner and press Open the Planner. It works on desktop and smartphone, in any modern browser. On first access a short welcome message explains the basics: dismiss it with Got it.
?welcome=skip to the address.3. Adding route points
A route is a sequence of points: start, optional intermediate stops and destination. There are two ways to add them:
- Search — use the “Search address, place or POI…” field to find a street, town or point of interest and add it to the route.
- Pin on the map — tap or click directly on the map to drop a point at the exact spot.
Each new point is appended to the bottom of the stops list in the side panel.
4. Managing and reordering stops
The Stops / Points panel lists every point of the route in the order they will be followed.
- Reorder — drag a stop up or down the list to change the order; the route recalculates automatically.
- Remove — delete a point you no longer need from the list.
- Undo — use the Undo button (or
⌘Z/Ctrl+Z) to revert the last change. - Reset — clear the whole route and start over.
On smartphones the stops panel opens from the bottom: drag it up to expand and down to collapse it.
5. Route preferences
Open Route preferences to tailor the calculation to how you ride. Available options:
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
| Allow motorways | If off, the route favours scenic and main roads. |
| Avoid toll roads | Excludes paid sections as much as possible. |
| Avoid unpaved roads | Keeps the route on asphalt. |
| Avoid ferries | Excludes ferry connections. |
Tick the options you want, then press Apply: the route is recalculated once, with all your choices at the same time. If you close the dialog with × or Esc after changing something, the preferences are applied anyway.
Preferences are kept for subsequent calculations. If you have an account, they are tied to your profile.
6. Calculation and summary
As soon as there are at least two points, the Planner calculates the route with motorcycle-optimised Valhalla. The Summary panel shows:
- Total distance of the route
- Estimated riding duration
- Estimated arrival time
Editing or reordering the points updates the summary in real time.
7. Importing and exporting GPX
Export
Press Download GPX to get the route's .gpx file, ready to load into MotoSpeed or any compatible navigator.
Import
Press Load GPX to open an existing track in the Planner: you can view it, edit its points and re-export it.
8. Reviewing a recorded ride
The Planner is not only for preparing a ride: it can rebuild one you have already done. You need the .gpx file exported by MotoSpeed at the end of a session.
Press Review a ride at the top right and pick the file. The map draws the track coloured by how far you leaned, and marks the hardest corners and the braking points. It requires access to your account, just like waypoints do.
The two panel tabs
Map shows the peaks of the ride — distance, duration, top speed and maximum lean per side — with switches to turn the markers on and off. Detail tells the ride over time: a speed and lean chart, the real moving average, corners grouped by lean angle and the list of highlights. Tapping a row moves the map to that point.
Braking: derived or measured
From the GPX alone, braking is derived from the change in speed, which GPS samples once per second: good enough to tell where you braked, less so for how hard. If you also export the telemetry CSV of the same session and load it with Add CSV, the figures become the ones measured by the sensors. If the CSV belongs to a different ride, the Planner rejects it rather than mixing the data.
9. Account and saved routes
Creating a free account lets you save routes and find them again from any device.
- Sign up — just email and password. The communications checkbox is optional (see Privacy).
- Save — stores the changes to the current route.
- Save as new — creates a separate copy without overwriting the original.
- My routes — opens the list of saved routes: you can load, rename or delete them.
- Logout — signs out; without login the Planner still works, but routes are not saved.
10. Using the GPX in MotoSpeed
The .gpx file exported from the Planner loads into MotoSpeed for turn-by-turn navigation on the bike: open MotoSpeed, import the track and follow it with voice guidance and speed-camera alerts. For details see the MotoSpeed guide.
11. Privacy and data
The Planner uses no profiling cookies or advertising trackers. The account (email and saved routes) is managed via Firebase; the session lives only in the browser tab. Full details on data processing, legal basis and user rights are in the MotoPath Privacy Policy.
12. Tips and troubleshooting
- Route not calculating — make sure you have at least two points and an active connection; retry after a few seconds if the routing service is briefly busy.
- Address not found — try a different wording (street + city) or drop a pin directly on the map.
- Routes not saved — make sure you are signed in before pressing Save.
- GPX not imported — check the file is a valid
.gpxwith a track or waypoints.
